Sixteen-year-old Maggie O’Neil is pathetically boring, and she’s okay with that. She goes to school, comes home, has dinner with her family, does her homework and goes to bed. On the weekend, she hangs out with her best friend or her boyfriend. Her idea of shaking up the status quo is to bypass her usual seat in one of her classes. But her comfortably mundane life is about to get a shot of adrenaline in the form of Simon Brady, a sexy transfer student from Ireland. Sure Simon is seriously adorable, but he also comes with some pretty terrifying baggage. In all of her sixteen years, faeries were something you read about in children’s books. They didn’t actually show up on your doorstep. They didn’t kiss you and make your knees go weak and whisper sweet nothings in your ear. Until Simon Brady, that is. Simon changed everything. He makes her heart race and her skin burn with excitement, but he has also changed her core beliefs about the world and made her see it as a dark and dangerous place filled with monsters that belong only in the lines of faery tales. There is no doubt in Maggie’s mind that she loves Simon, but can she see past who he is and find a place for him in her heart?
Courage and Other Demons Courage Series Book 1 eBook Jill Daugherty
I'm fascinated with the idea of faeries and can't resist reading stories about them. Daugherty created a unique version of fey that was completely captivating. She seamlessly wove Irish myths and legends about faeries into the present day world to make the story believable and exciting. I was a little heartbroken at the end of the book with the loss suffered after the faery battle. I was sad to see it end like it did and I worry about what that means for the relationship between the main character, Maggie, and her best friend, Lexie, in the next book. The good news, no matter how much heartbreak and sadness and tragedy there is in Courage and Other Demons, the reward is Brandon, Maggie's little brother. He's a riot. I think the DAM scene was quite possibly my favorite in the entire book. Brandon could totally be fey himself...an ornery one like Puck from a Midsummer Night's Dream. This is a great read by a talented Indie author.Product details

Courage and Other Demons Courage Series Book 1 eBook Jill Daugherty Reviews
From the first chapter, I was pulled into the life of Maggie, a high school student, who discovers her life is soon to take a path which will require unimaginable courage. I was pleasantly surprised as the character of Simon unfolded and was drawn into the story line of his family and their connection with Maggie. I could not put this book down, completed it in one day and was longing for more. This is a must read and I hope there is a sequel coming soon.
Definitely entertaining.
I picked up this book several months ago and just got around to reading it. I wish I had read it sooner! I love Maggie and Simon. I thought Maggie's reaction to Simon's big secret was great and real. Not just blind adoration like you find in some books. Lots of action to go with the romance so it was never boring! immediately ordered the next book!
I read this book halfway and quit. There simply isn't enough interest for me to continue. First, the writing itself is clear, but I don't understand why it took over one-third of the story to even mention Simon was a fairy. You get a hint of something in the very beginning, then the entire store reverts to the typical teenage girl angst you can find in any other romance book.
There is scene after scene of Maggie chasing Simon. Maggie and Simon going skiing. Maggie and Simon at the park. None of it having beans to do with the plot. With the exception of a handful of minor moments hinting at something going on behind the scenes and Maggie's continuing dreams about an old woman, I had to force myself to read further, hoping something, anything, would happen. When it finally did, Maggie became a blubbering female. The whole depression, he's-hurt-me, sequence was annoying. Get angry, throw things, drive over there and pound down his door. DO SOMETHING. But stop curling up in bed. Honestly.
Add to that the fairy bit coming in out of nowhere plot-wise, and I didn't believe any of it when it happened. The author would have done better to give the story more of a mystery-fantasy feel and cut out the unneeded scenes. Give me some excitement. Make me want to turn the page. At halfway, I should be dying to know what comes next and instead I just want to move on.
To be fair, maybe something happens at the end to redeem the characters, but that's the point - it should have happened way before now to hook me. Overall review 3.5 stars. I could not round up to 4 because it is not a 4-star story. Passable reading. Clean, but that in itself wasn't enough to save it.
I will readily admit to anyone who knows me that while I love paranormal fiction, my true passion is reading books about faeries. That said, this is definitely one of my absolute favorite stories on that subject.
This tale strikes a perfect balance between action and romance. Ms. Daugherty doesn't try to force too much into this first part; therefore I never felt like the storyline was rushed or that there were gaping holes in the story. I was also pleasantly surprised that the end of this book completely finished setting the scene for this series while leaving me 100 percent impatient for the next installment.
This is nothing less than an absolute success. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND for any lovers of fiction in general. It's a MUST read for lovers of paranormal fiction, and if you love faerie fiction (like me), you can't live without it. While this story is in the young adult genre, it is so well done that anyone can enjoy the tale. I have nothing negative to say about this one. This is the best book I've read in months...which is saying something because I read at least ten books a month. Well done Ms. Daugherty. You've got an instant fan in me...and since I'm not great at thank-you notes please send my thanks to your mom if you happen to see this. -)
I kind of like the book in the beginning and the end. But there was some parts that was good in the middle, I did kind of like the main character in some parts of the story. But the ending is having me want to find out what's going to happen!
This is a book I got for a review!
I cannot start to tell you how wonderful this book is. In my entire life, I have not read a book half as good as this. It is the perfect book. This author, Jill Daugherty, is incredibly skilled when it comes to writing. I was so obsessed with this book I had to take it with me everywhere. It has kept me up for nights, because even after I had finished it, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I would say that Jill Daugherty is the PERFECT author, and she could not have done better. You have to buy this book, It would be a crime if you didn't. I felt like I was there with Maggie O'Neil. Seriously, Jill Daugherty is that good of a author. There is no way you could keep me from buying any book that she writes. Keep up the good work, Ms.Daugherty!! -)
Maggie is just trying to get through high school with an ok boyfriend and an awesome BFF. Along comes Irish exchange student Simon, and her predictable world is turned upside down. This beautifully sets the stage for this trilogy, Maggie's growing into her Courage. Growing up and maturing into her part of a Prophecy she had never heard about. Enjoyed the pace, the development, and the realistic emotional journey Maggie is traveling. Looking forward to the rest of her and Simon's story!
